I found the book wishes to be beautifully heart wrenching.

Every time I finished a page, I knew how it would end.

And yet, I was still unprepared for it.

The poetic form and the beauty of the illustrations do such a great job of delivering the message in this book.

I could absolutely see reading this book to talk about immigration. Especially since it is written from the point of view of a child. This makes it easier for students to comprehend and connect to.

I could also see using this book to talk about the things we wish for that we shouldn’t have to. What a great book to discuss equality and equity. This is such a difficult concept for students to understand, and yet something they need to learn to be successful in learning and life.

I’d also like to use this book for my students to make connections to. I have students who are also immigrants. While their story isn’t exactly like the young girl in the book, it’s good for them to see that other children experience the same.

I cannot wait to order this book for my school library!
