Description

Students will excitedly set goals for their upcoming year by learning about different series available in the library. After they identify artifacts they would pack in their suitcase, they’ll think about why. This interactive activity prepares them to think about their own perceptions and how books can shift those by immersing them in the setting, events, and characters. All artifacts are connected to series that 4th – 6th grade typically enjoy. They’ll then sort through different series that act as sliding glass doors and rank them from those they’d most likely read to least.

I like using this activity on the first day of school to fifth grade. It can also be used any time you introduce the concept of Books As Sliding Glass Doors to students.

They’ll also learn how to sit and listen to a story, transition from a story to independent work, and how to work independently. After downloading this resource you will receive print and digital activities for Grade 5 to learn about the library, series of interest, and set library goals.
