Everything I know about Augmented and Virtual Reality (ARVR), I have learned from Jaime Donally. Marialice Curran connected me with her so that I could learn more about ARVR and start using it in meaningful ways with my students.

Augmented Reality is digitally augmenting or changing your environment. Some great Augmented Reality applications include:

  • 3DBear: Students can create augmented pictures or videos. Bring books to life, share research, or even give an augmented tour!
  • Plum’s Creaturizer: Students can create hybrid creatures and then go on photo missions that show them surviving in the wild.
  • Quiver: Students color pages and then scan them through the quiver app for interactive adventures. My favorite is decorating my own Starbucks cup!
  • PopAR posters and books: Interactive books, posters and puzzles; when scanned with the app students are brought to additional information or can move items around the room.
  • Chromville: Students color a page and scan it with the app to learn more. The pages are turned into interactive worksheets where they can answer questions to support learning

Virtual Reality is an immersive 3Dimensional simulation. Some great virtual reality apps that don’t require iPods, smartphones or VR headsets include:

  • 360 Cities: This site and app has great panoramic of places around the world. Bring your students to recycling centers, the savannah, or Hong Kong from the comfort of your media center.
  • CoSpaces: This app combines coding with virtual reality allowing your students to create interactive and virtual experiences for others.
  • Discovery VR: I love this extension of the Discovery Channel because you can swim with sharks, experience asteroids, or go skydiving safely in your library media center.
  • Google Expeditions: Another great Google product that lets you be your students’ tour guide and take them on great adventures!
  • Portals: Walk around the media center to walk in and out of different places and spaces. Just be mindful of where you walk!

ARVR are great ways for students to become immersed in the learning process. It invites your students to locations they may not be able to experience otherwise, builds background knowledge, and teaches great content! There are many more! Be sure to follow Jaime Donally and #ARVRinEdu to continue the learning.
