I don’t know about you, but I have a ridiculous number of books that are overdue right now. From Facebook, Instagram, and Library Media Conferences, I know that I am not alone.
The school year is winding down and our last day of school is June 17th. I want to have plenty of time to collect books, so our last checkout date will be Friday, May 3rd. I am pushing for all books to be back in the library by June 7th.
Gently nagging children and families for books is really not my thing. At the same time, neither is losing thousands of dollars of books. Last year I tried a couple of Kathy’s ideas from Staying Cool in the Library. I really love Emily’s Book Return Memes and also created my own that I hang around the school; everywhere kids will see them!
My end of year book collection looks a bit like this:

It is important to include everyone in the book return raffle. Last year, I had a couple of kiddos who were absent or returned their books a day or two early. They didn’t get raffle tickets and felt left off.
Off the bat, everyone who doesn’t have a book out will get the number of raffle tickets equivalent to the number of books their grade can check out. For example, grades 1 and 2 can borrow two books and will get two raffle tickets on the day they come to their scheduled Media class.
